Subway Salon Castagno Color is an Intercoiffure Salon. Membership to Intercoiffure is one of the most highly prized distinctions a salon can hold.   • The History of Subway Salon

    The name, "Subway," originated in 1970 when Robert Castagno opened his first salon at the corner of Millburn and Main in Millburn, New Jersey. Its entrance, a cement walkway located beneath the building, resembled a subway entrance, so Robert chose the name Subway and the first unisex salon on the East coast was born.

    The popularity of the salon, frequented by a number of New York City celebrities, created a demand for greater space and the salon moved across the street. The Subway motif was carried over by covering the walls with shiny metal to resemble a subway car. The salon became so busy that at times clients spilled out into the streets!

    Throughout the eighties, Subway expanded even more, opening five satellite locations in Northeast New Jersey. Despite great success, Robert and Barbara felt they could serve their clients best by consolidating all of their talent under one roof. Their world-renowned coloring department was moved into its own area of the salon and thus Castagno Color was established. Both facilities are in the same building on Millburn Avenue in Millburn.

    Subway Salon just completed renovations to the entire salon to continue expanding its services to keep you on the cutting edge of the latest trends and styles. Our new look combines elements of nature and warm tones to invoke a more relaxed, peaceful atmosphere which we know you will love.

    Subway Salon is located in the heart of Millburn, New Jersey, an upscale suburban community filled with great shopping and restaurants and only 30 miles outside New York City. With 29 years in the community, the salon has a firmly established clientele. They offer state-of-the-art technology and the latest fashionable trends.
